MARK WILSON FLEMING - MY STORY
My life took an unexpected turn after a traumatic event, which was followed closely by the heartbreaking loss of a very close friend—events that together left me grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). What began as occasional nightmares and unease soon escalated into relentless flashbacks, overwhelming grief, severe anxiety, and chronic insomnia. Everyday activities, once simple and routine, became sources of stress and exhaustion. I found myself withdrawing from friends and family, struggling to hold onto relationships that once brought me joy, and feeling lost without the person who had been such an important part of my life. My work performance suffered as concentration became a constant battle, and it felt as though I was fighting to just get through each day.
Recognizing the toll this was taking on me, I knew I had to seek help. Through therapy, support groups, and learning to process both the trauma and my grief, I gradually built coping strategies that helped me regain control over my life. With the unwavering support of my partner, my family, and the love and understanding within the LGBTQ+ community, each day gets a little bit better. I have learned that healing is not linear—there are still hard days—but it requires patience, understanding, and a resilience I didn’t always know I had. My journey reflects the experience of many living with PTSD; a condition that affects nearly 8 million adults in the UK each year, according to recent studies. Research also shows that early intervention and community support significantly improve outcomes for those affected.
Despite these challenges, I remain an active and inspiring member of my community. I am a regular volunteer, and was recently appointed as a trustee for Basildon Pride—something I do partly in memory of my friend, to honour the connection we shared and the joy we found in being part of something meaningful together. My commitment to giving back demonstrates the strength and hope that can emerge from even the most difficult struggles, and how we can turn pain into purpose. My story is a testament to the strength required to face invisible wounds, walk through grief, and the vital importance of awareness and compassion. While PTSD and loss can feel deeply isolating, my experience reminds us that with the right support, recovery is possible, and life beyond trauma and heartache can be rebuilt—with love, memories, and hope at its heart.
